In September 1856, the steamboat Arabia sank only 6 miles west of Kansas City. Because of erosion, the Missouri River changed course over time, and the Arabia was covered underground for over a century – along with all of its valuable freight. Lying 45 feet below a Kansas cornfield, the Arabia’s payload was protected from light and oxygen. In 1988 work began to extricate the treasures of the Arabia and a museum was constructed to house them. Allow 90 minutes to tour the museum.
