Blank Park Zoo opened in 1966 on the south side of Des Moines. The zoo operated until 1982 when it closed for renovations. The zoo reopened in 1986 and has since expanded to include over 1,400 animals on 49 acres. The zoo is the only zoo in the state of Iowa.
