The John Ball zoo first opened in 1891. During the great depression, the zoo fell on hard times and had to give away much of their collection of animals. The zoo began to resurrect itself in the 1950’s and continued to do so while it was operated by the city of Grand Rapids. In 1989, the park where the John Ball zoo sits was sold to Kent County which assumed the operation of the zoo. The zoo has grown to now house over 2,000 animals on 140 acres.
