Zoo Atlanta began in 1889 when a bankrupt traveling circus was purchased by George Cress and the animals were donated to the city of Atlanta. The zoo was located in Grant Park. The city continued to own and operate the zoo until the 1980’s when it began to fall into disrepair and in 1985 a non-profit corporation was formed to operate the zoo. A massive restoration of the zoo began at that time and continues to this day.
The zoo is home to over 1,500 animals which are housed on the zoo’s 40 acres of exhibits.
