The original Detroit zoo opened in 1883 across the street from where the old Tiger Stadium stood, but that version of the zoo only lasted a year. The current zoo, located in Royal Oak and Huntington Woods, Michigan opened in 1928 and has grown to now house over 2,100 animals on it’s 125 acres of property.
The zoo is the largest paid attraction in Michigan and draws well over 1.3 million visitors per year.
